Whitespace and line feeds
Most characters are simply rendered by formatting engines, but whitespace characters and line-feed characters can be treated in different ways. A number of attributes are available to control how they are handled.

When there are consecutive whitespace characters, this may be due to the formatting of the source XML document rather than any intended document content. Many formatting engines and the popular Web browsers reduce sequences of whitespace down to a single space character, but allow this behaviour to be overridden in special cases (such as within the PRE (pre-formatted) element in HTML).
