In-line objects

It is often not sufficient simply to break a block down into lines. Sometimes, a word or phrase within the text needs to be formatted in a different manner (such as the bold terms on this page), or a picture or page number (both current and referenced pages) needs to be inserted into the text at a specific point. These are all examples of 'in-line' objects. An in-line object may apply styles to a range of text within a line, or one starting on one line and ending on another. In-line objects are also used to format individual characters, and to insert leader dots ('….', commonly used in indexes).
