As you are aware, the majority of graphics on the Web are in the form of bitmap graphics composed of tiny colored pixels. Bitmap graphics are certainly great for approximating the wide range of colors in photographs, but they aren't ideal for all graphics. They take up a lot of space and can take considerable time to download. Bitmaps can also suffer in quality when they are scaled or transformed. Vector graphics provide a solution to many of the problems of bitmaps, and they're becoming popular as a graphics format on the Web.
