XML and the State of Web Browsers

XML is proving to be the most exciting and empowering of recent Web technologies. However, current Web browser support of it is surprisingly weak. When you consider how long the XML 1.0 specification has been around (since February 1998), it boggles the mind that Web browsers are still so lacking in support for it. Granted, Microsoft came to the plate fairly quickly with Internet Explorer 5.0, but as you'll learn a little later in the chapter, Microsoft has played it very loose when it comes to XML standards. As of this writing, Netscape is preparing to unveil Navigator 5.0, which may adhere more closely to XML standards. How closely it adheres to those standards has yet to be seen.
