Summary

The structure of an XML document is determined by the document type declaration, which contains within it the document type definition or DTD. A DTD serves as a template for a class of documents and is made up of markup declarations that establish the grammer for the class of documents. DTDs are critical in the design and development of XML documents becuse they provide a means of validating documents.
