1.8. Typesetting Conventions

This book uses a few typesetting conventions that are worth pointing out. For example, a word or phrase in the monospace font indicates a code snippet. Frequently this font points out a specific type (such as simpleType), a specific instance of a type (such as the specification of the custom simple type street), or even a specific element or attribute instance (such as the element street in an XML instance). The monospace font also denotes code listings:

Occasionally, a code listing indicates a variable that would need something substituted for it before using the code. The variable appears in an italic monospace font:
