D.1. General Overview

Oracle9i was developed to take nearly full advantage of the current and upcoming XML Recommendations. Oracle8i was released long before XML was widely used, and much of the XML work in Oracle8i was added onto the database rather than being supported in the database. As a result, some functionality simply cannot be represented and other functionality requires extra effort to design and implement.

D.1.1. UTF-16 Support

Oracle8i does not support UTF-16, but does have partial UTF-8 support. As a result, Oracle8i does not support Unicode 3.0, on which the new XML Recommendations are based. In addition, many of the PL/SQL functions do not exist for Unicode support.
