Chapter 16. Variables and Parameters in XSLT

In order to perform many advanced tasks, you’ll need to be able to pass values into templates that are being processed, or hold values temporarily during processing. As in a programming language, such as Java, you use parameters and variables to perform these tasks in XSL Transformations (XSLT). As you’ll learn in this chapter, parameters and variables can have either a local scope or a global scope. Unlike global parameters and variables, which can be referenced anywhere in an XSLT styles heet once they’re defined, local parameters and variables have a very specific scope and can only be used in a part of the stylesheet.
