Sequence alignment tools are fundamental in the bioinformatics arena. A sequence alignment tool compares two or more sequences in order to determine how similar the sequences are or if subsections of the sequences are similar. A common use of the tool is for a researcher who sequences a section of DNA to then access a database and search for other DNA sequences that are similar to the one being studied. Finding other sequences in the database that are similar is a first step in trying to determine the functionality of the gene or to determine other organisms that may have a similar gene.
