The structure of an XPath expression is described by hierarchies of charts. These charts are highly recursive, and it can be difficult to establish which are 'top-level' charts. Nevertheless, significant entry-points include LocationPath{1}, Predicate{8}, Expr{14}, ExprToken{28} and ExprWhitespace{39}. The table below lists the charts in the order that they are defined in the standard, and as they are presented in this chapter:

LocationPath 14 Expr 27 UnaryExpr
AbsoluteLocationPath 15 PrimaryExpr 28 ExprToken
RelativeLocationPath 16 FunctionCall 29 Literal
Step 17 Argument 30 Number
AxisSpecifier 18 UnionExpr 31 Digits
AxisName 19 PathExpr 32 Operator
NodeTest 20 FilterExpr 33 OperatorName
Predicate 21 OrExpr ...
