The structure of an XML document is described by hierarchies of charts. Apart from the obvious hierarchy describing the logical structure of a complete XML document, document{01}, there are other 'top-level' charts that describe a data file that contains an external DTD, extSubset{30}, or fragment thereof, extPE{79}, an external text entity, extParsedEnt{78}, and the value of an attribute when it is a set of names, Names{06}, name tokens, Nmtokens{08}, or a language code, languageID{33}.

The table below lists the charts in the order that they are defined in the standard, and as they are presented in this chapter:
