Overview

XML builds on the principles and conventions of two existing languages, HTML and SGML, to create a simple yet powerful mechanism for information storage, processing and delivery. These standards were in turn influenced by earlier markup languages, and by the Internet, and have in turn influenced newer standards for delivery of various kinds of information to many media outlets:
