File paths

Selecting a file takes more than just locating the system that contains it and naming the file required. Most modern computer systems divide file storage into areas called directories, which can also contain sub-directories, so creating a directory hierarchy. Many files may have the same name, and be distinguished only by their location in this hierarchy. It is therefore necessary to find the directory containing the file. This is done by stepping down through the hierarchical layers to home in on the file.
