Simple link limitations

The simple links described above are a very minor part of the XLink specification, and have only been included for backward compatibility with earlier SGML and HTML schemes, and to simplify as far as possible the markup needed to support the most basic, but also most widely used, form of hypertext link. The simple link scheme is very limited. A simple link cannot:

  • start from a read-only document

  • be bi-directional

  • have multiple target ending-point resources

  • be stored with other links in a single place for ease of maintenance.

The linking element is embedded in the text, so cannot be added to a read-only document (perhaps a document that is owned by another party).
