Introduction

XML document and file management becomes an important issue when a large number of documents and components of documents are involved, when they have a long life-span, and when a number of authors are involved. It is important that XML documents are not misplaced, corrupted or stolen, and can be relocated without causing breaking links between related documents. A number of techniques are available for effective management of XML documents, at various levels of sophistication (and cost), including:

  • storing documents as files in a directory-based operating system

  • as above, but using public identifiers and catalogues to enable documents to be moved without breaking inter-document relationships
