Formatting instructions

If formatting-based applications of XML are seen as a distraction at best, and a dangerous idea at worst, then there is obviously a need for a mechanism by which the components of any self-describing XML document can be given appropriate formatting characteristics when it needs to be presented.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to rely upon computer software to make meaningful formatting decisions, such as deciding that the content of a 'CompanyPresident' element should be presented in a bold typeface. Instead, such mappings between information units and presentation styles must be made using human judgement, and through the creation of pre-defined formatting instructions.
