Stylesheet languages

Some stylesheet languages described below are used to directly format the content. Others are really transformation languages that can be used to produce output in any of the formatting languages described in the next section.

DSSSL

The powerful DSSSL (Document Style Semantics and Specification Language) standard has been developed over many years for use with SGML. It was finally released as an ISO standard in 1996, but due to its complexity there is still little software support for it. Potential users of this sophisticated language have avoided it due to its complex syntax, which is derived from its origins as a Scheme-based language:
