XSLT and XSL

The term 'XSL' and the term 'XSLT' are easily confused, and sometimes wrongly used interchangeably.

XSL

The XSL format was originally designed to fill a void between the simple CSS and complex DSSSL standards, and has features that are derived from both. The main structure of the language was derived from DSSSL, but the styling characteristics were inherited from CSS.

XSLT extracted from XSL

XSLT was previously just one part of the draft XSL standard, but has now been extracted into a separate standard of its own.
