Whitespace

The term 'whitespace' is used to describe a small number of miscellaneous characters that have no visual appearance, but in some way affect the formatting of a document.

The space character is usually used to separate words, and the tab character is usually used to help align columns of text. Depending on the computer platform concerned, the carriage return and line-feed characters are used, either alone or in combination, to indicate the end of a line in the text (so can be collectively termed 'line-end' codes).
