How to Capture Requirements

A requirement, in systems and software development terms, is just that, a required piece of functionality. Implicit in the word requirement, however, is a relationship among people. Understanding that relationship and your role in it is key to the process of effectively gathering requirements. The process of requirements gathering requires customer orientation, even if that “customer” is an internal one. The customer is always right, as the phrase goes. That doesn't mean you do everything the customer says. You have to lead your customer through the process of definition of requirements, all the while nimbly jumping in and out of his mind set.
