This book is for UNIX users everywhere. It’s for the corporate manager who needs UNIX to send email. It’s for the student who has a computer account to write history papers on. This book is for UNIX users who are not particularly interested in computers, but who just need to get their work done. You shouldn’t need to know how a combustion engine works in order to drive a car, and you shouldn’t need to know how the operating system works to write a memo. But you can save a lot of calls to your auto club if you just know a few small things: how to fix a flat, how to add motor oil, how to stick a pencil in the choke of a carbureted engine, etc. The same with UNIX; you can save a lot of calls to your administrator if you just learn a few basic things.
