If you don’t have read permission, you won’t be able to see the contents of the file.

If you try to open a file that you don’t have read permission for, you won’t be able to see the contents of the file. For example, if you use vi or Emacs or more or any other UNIX program to see a file that is restricted from you, the program will fail and will give an error message such as “Permission denied” or “cannot open.”
