Check if the command was misspelled.

Misspelling a command is one of the most common mistakes people can make. Check for the following:

  • Spaces between the command name and options. (If you don’t include spaces, the command thinks the option is part of the name of the command.)

  • Characters that you may be reading incorrectly — for example, is that number 1 really a letter l?

  • Case sensitivity. Remember that UNIX is case-sensitive. You can’t exchange a lowercase letter with an uppercase letter or vice versa and still expect it to work.

  • Words that may need to be substituted. Is “filename” supposed to be replaced with the name of an actual file? Is “n” supposed to be replaced by a number?
