If you still can’t log in, try another terminal to rule out equipment problems.

Once you’ve determined that you’ve typed your login name and password correctly, but you still can’t log in, here are some other things to try:

  • Try logging in at another person’s terminal. This way, you make sure to discount problems with your keyboard or terminal. If you can log in somewhere else, it’s possible that you just need to reboot your terminal and you’ll be fine again (especially for X terminals).

  • See if anyone else is having this problem. This way you can find out if something is wrong with just your account, or whether something’s wrong with the systemwide password database.
