7. Exploring Interactive Fiction Genres

A good way to understand how interactive fiction genres can be used to fulfill or twist a player’s expectations is to think about genres as if they are ice cream flavors.

Let’s say that you enter an imaginary ice cream shop and peer into the case. There, tucked behind the glass, is a container of vanilla ice cream mixed with chunks of broken Oreos. You can easily identify that flavor as cookies and cream, even if you’ve never before bought ice cream in this particular shop.
