Isuspect it is the sheer volume of my psychoanalytic publications that elicited the invitation to contribute an essay to this symposium. I was fortunate enough to earn my psychoanalytic qualifications at a relatively early age, so that I have had almost four full decades of opportunity to practise the craft of writing in psychoanalysis. My career could well be characterized by the mocking bon mot once used to deprecate Edward Gibbon, “still scribbling….” How many pages have I published?
