The overview presented here is brief, but hopefully suffices to demonstrate the diversity of the visualisation ecosystem. In most cases there are several software packages in a variety of languages available to support the developer in achieving any given aim. One significant point to bear in mind when choosing between packages and languages is the need to choose a development environment within which the researcher, student or team is comfortable, or to factor in the time taken to become familiar with new languages and frameworks.
