Many organizations are not places where you can speak freely.

There are several reasons for this. Consider the following:

  • When you speak frankly to someone in your personal life, there’s a good chance what you say goes no further than the two of you. In organizations, what one person says is often passed along to others. Unless you’ve requested that something you say be held in confidence, sooner or later it will be mentioned to a third party and then the whole office knows. With this in mind, most people censor what they really think and feel.
