Preface

My father, whose dream was that I should join the foreign service, was insistent that I should also tell my story in a book. After him, my wife, Lekha; my sons, Sreenath and Sreekanth; my daughter-in-law, Roopa; and a good friend, Lilykutty Illickal, among others, kept urging me to write, whenever I told them an interesting experience of one kind or the other. For many years, whenever anything significant happened to me, even a good score on the golf course, I used to say that I had one thing more to tell my grandchildren. Now that Durga and Krishna, my grandchildren, are old enough to hear stories, if not to read them, here is my story for them and my other grandchildren, as yet unborn. If anyone else reads it, it will be a bonus.
