In basic themes, the front page of the site is handled by index.php, where all of the blog posts are shown as a list. Unless your primary site functionality is blogging, it will require a separate template for the front page's design. According to the template hierarchy, home.php can be used to design the front page of the site. This template is available in most premium themes and contains very advanced designs. There is also an optional template in this path called front-page.php. However, it's not available in most themes and hence you may not have to use it in common development tasks.
