Throughout this book, I have introduced you to plugins that are useful for the topics of each lesson. Of course, there are many other uses for plugins, so this lesson lists some common topics for which people want plugins.

Following are some of the top plugins for a number of common purposes:

Ad Managers

Although this is not the place to go into the details of running ads on your website, you should know that there are two types of advertising:

  • Running ads you've sold
  • Running ads provided by an ad network (such as Google AdSense)

You can, of course, do both on your site, but if you're going to use an ad network, be aware that you need a reasonable amount of traffic to make it worthwhile. Typically, people talk about having at least 5,000 unique visitors per month. Plugins can help you integrate ad networks into your site.

To sell ads, you may not need a large amount of traffic but simply the right targeted traffic for your advertisers. Although you could just stick an ad in your sidebar, a plugin enables you to schedule how long it's shown, where it's shown, and even to whom it's shown, plus, it should provide the important statistics you need to show your advertisers as proof of views ...
