Introduction

An Office App is a third-party software component that adds functionality or extends features in an Office document. For example, you can add an app called Dictionary - Merriam to use an enhanced dictionary. You can quickly install, insert, and manage apps from the Office Store at Office.com directly from an Office program.

An add-in extends the functionality of Word and other Microsoft Office programs. Word includes a variety of add-ins—programs that are included with Word but not essential to its functionality. Before you can use a Word or a third-party add-in, you need to load it first. When you load an add-in, the feature may add a command to a Ribbon tab.
