Format Text Direction

Synopsis

The first noticeable thing about the Format Text Direction command is that it is rarely available from the menu. This is because only certain text—text in a table, or text in a text box — can be redirected.

Figure 8-14 shows redirected text in a table.

Note

Remember that text boxes aren’t visible in Normal view. To add a text box or redirect the text in an existing text box, be sure you’re in Print Layout view.

If the insertion point is in a table cell or text box, the command opens the Text Direction dialog box. Use it to choose from visual samples of different vertical text positions, and see a Preview of the selection.

After changing the text direction, the Alignment, Bullets, Numbering, and Indent buttons on the Formatting toolbar are displayed vertically as well. This change is only in effect when redirected text is selected.
