Shooting History and Heroes

Images of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro are everywhere in Havana. They line the walls, adorn t-shirts, and appear as statues. They appear as ubiquitously and iconically as the Virgin Mary does in other Latin American cultures, or as Ho Chi Minh does in Vietnam. The revolution and the heroes who fought it are not just an historical curiosity of the past but a mindset. It has a personality of its own here, and you brush against it in every café and marketplace. You begin to think you could awaken in the morning to find the ghost of Che standing over your bed and not be surprised at all to see him calling you to arms.
