Being in the right place is often a matter of odds—there’s just no way to know ahead of time that the place you are in is the “right” one. You can only know that in hindsight, when you have the photographs in the can and have that sense of excitement that comes when you know you got the shot. Still, you can increase your odds. How? Research and scouting. Start with your Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. Those will give you the broad strokes, while the locals, the guy at the hotel, or the backpackers who have been there for a month and have no plans to leave can help you with the details.
