KATHMANDU, NEPAL. I shot this the day after I saw it. I went to dinner without my cameras. Glad to be free of all my gear, I ate, sent some emails, then walked home and—wouldn’t you know it?—missed some unforgettable opportunities. Everywhere people gathered around butter candles or fires, their faces illuminated by the flames, small pockets of warm light in darkness I wouldn’t normally think about shooting in. I walked the long road back to the guesthouse kicking myself. The next night, I brought my camera and my fastest lens, Canon’s 85mm f/1.2 L, which allowed me to shoot at ISO 800 and still keep the shutter at a manageable 1/100.
