Beyond the Postcard: The Value of Wandering

I was looking for the so-called Blue Mosque in Cairo. It took us three hours to find it, and when we did it was rundown, lifeless, and occupied by an asthmatic and self-appointed guide who I thought was going to die on me as he led me up the stairs to see the view. As cliché as it is to say that the journey matters more than the destination, it’s truer than not most of the time. While it took me three hours to get to a destination in which I didn’t shoot a single frame, the journey there through the alleys, side streets, and souks provided me with many shots. Getting lost has given me more of my better images than I care to admit.
