KASHMIR, INDIA. We’d camped beside the Lidder River above Aru in Kashmir. We were there to meet the Gujjar shepherds and were striking camp after two days of visiting their homes, sharing endless cups of salt-tea, and photographing their families. When this character approached me, I wondered if he’d let me take his photograph, so when he grabbed my arm and insisted he was over 100 years old and I should take his photograph while I could, I knew we were going to have a good time.
