Seeing the Light

For a craft that is so uniquely dependent on light, I am constantly amazed at how little attention is given to the quality of light. I shot for well over a dozen years before it occurred to me that quantity of light is nowhere near as important as quality of light. Quantity of light is what we learn first—how to control the amount of light striking the film or sensor through a combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. We can add strobes to increase the light or a Neutral Density filter to cut it, but in general it’s easier to make up for the quantity of light than for its quality, particularly when it’s natural light.
