2.4 GHz

Operating frequency shared by cordless telephones, wireless home networks (WLAN or Wi-Fi), and (unfortunately) microwave ovens and other devices that can cause interference.

5.8 GHz

Operating frequency for newer cordless telephones and wireless home networks (WLAN or Wi-Fi), with less interference (yet) from other devices.

802.11

IEEE working group and standards dealing with wireless networking.

802.11a

An IEEE wireless networking standard that specifies a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbps and an operating frequency of 5 GHz. Not compatible with 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n.
