Troubleshooting Search

Computer administrators may have to deal the following troubleshooting issues with Windows Search.

Problem: The Windows Search service will not start.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Use Services.msc to verify that WSearch is set to Automatic startup type and uses the Local System account as its security context.

  • Verify that the permissions on the hidden catalog folder (%SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search) are as follows:

    • Everyone has Read & Execute permission

    • SYSTEM has Full Control permission

    • Administrators has Full Control permission

    • Currently logged-on user has Read & Execute permission

Problem: Missing or corrupted index.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Rebuild the index.

  • Move the index to a new location.
