Upgrading from a Previous Version of Windows

The initial steps for upgrading from a previous version of Windows to Vista are virtually the same as for performing a clean install. The only differences are that you must insert the Vista DVD while Windows XP is running, and when presented with the Upgrade/Custom screen shown in Figure A-2, you must choose Upgrade, and your files, settings, and programs will be kept intact during the upgrade process. However, just to be safe, it’s a good idea to back up your data, in case something goes wrong during the upgrade.
