Use Windows Defender

Although third-party antivirus software is recommended, Windows Vista does come with some antivirus protection, Windows Defender. Windows Defender offers three tools to help keep your computer virus, spyware, and malware free: built-in, automatic, real-time protection from online threats; an online community in which you can participate called Microsoft SpyNet; and options for scanning your computer for malicious code and removing any that is found. You can also open Windows Defender anytime you want to see whether your computer is infected, to scan the computer, and to see whether your computer is running normally. When you open Windows Defender, you want to see what shown in Figure 14-9.
