Chapter 3. The Direct Connection Network

  • Physically connect two PCs by using one of several methods

  • Share an Internet connection

THE MOST BASIC TYPE of network is one consisting of only two computers connected directly to each other via a single cable. For older PCs, that cable is often a serial null modem cable or a parallel interlink cable. For newer PCs, it’s a direct Ethernet cable, also referred to as a patch or crossover cable, a USB link cable, or a FireWire cable. If you have the proper hardware installed, you can even make the connection by using an infrared connection, with no wires at all!
