Why You Need a Network

If you have more than one PC in your home or office, you really need some kind of network. There are, perhaps, 1,000 reasons why, but for the sake of limiting this book to a reasonable number of pages, I’ll list my top 10 reasons here:

  • To share information including data, music, pictures, movies, and other media

  • To share resources including printers, cameras, and scanners

  • To install and use a firewall (such as a router) to protect the network from unwanted incoming data

  • To configure access control for each user with a user name and password

  • To centralize management by keeping data that is needed by all users on a server or shared hard drive

  • To work wirelessly from a laptop in any room of the house (or from the patio or garden) ...
