A discussion group (also called a newsgroup) is a place on the Internet where people communicate with each other by posting and reading messages about topics that interest them. The discussion groups at Microsoft are generally technical and troubleshooting in nature.

A discussion group contains discussion threads, which are related messages. When a person posts a message, it is either to respond to an earlier post (in a thread) or to create a new one, thus creating a new thread. Anyone can access messages posted to newsgroups.
