Chapter 2. Understanding 64-Bit Windows

Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2008 is a complete architectural change from earlier versions of SBS—it is built on the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008. This is a radical change for those who have only been using 32-bit Windows. Gone are the memory constraints inherent in 32-bit Windows, and with them some of the limitations inherent in SBS.

In this chapter, we’ll cover some of the underlying reasons for the change to 64-bit, how it affects what you can (and can’t) do with Windows Small Business Server 2008, and how this change will also affect the clients on your SBS network.
