Information Rights Management (IRM) and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Microsoft has developed Information Rights Management (IRM) to protect organizations’ content and intellectual property. IRM enables security and access controls for content so that when a user attempts to access a protected file from a SharePoint document library, IRM will verify that the user does in fact have the rights to access the file. A license will then be given to the user allowing access to the content at the appropriate security or permissions level. IRM encrypts the file before the user actually downloads the content, which further secures the intellectual property and content of the file.
