Failing Over Virtual Machines

There are three ways to fail over virtual machines from the production site to the DR site when using HVR:

  • A test failover
  • A planned failover
  • An unplanned failover

Performing a Test Failover

The test failover will create a copy of the virtual machine and connect it to the test failover virtual switch (if it is set up). The process for setting up the copy of the virtual machine is quite clever:

  • A clone of the virtual machine is created. You can choose a recovery point if you have enabled them.
  • A differential VHD is created, using the replica virtual machine’s storage as the parent. The parent storage will be a snapshot AVHD file if you chose a recovery point.
