Port Access Control Lists
An access control list (ACL) is simply a set of filters that enable you to control packet flow as you permit or deny their access in or out of a system. Historically, ACLs have been utilized by the systems administrator to protect the operating system via a local firewall feature, and by the network administrator to filter traffic and provide extra security for their networks, generally applied on routers and switches.
The primary reason for configuring ACLs is to provide security in your environment, by using this powerful method to control traffic flow in quite a granular fashion.
